project 2 poems on power and conflict

With in this project I decide I wanted to do poem as I did a mini project already and like how the was made, the poems I decide to do the theme on power and conflict as that topic was the most invoking topic I have looked in to.

I chose there poem to illustrate for and this will be a double page spread having one side with my artwork and the other side will be the poem.

The first poem I have done is called a poison tree by William Blake, the poem is about how anger was bottling up for a while until it spilled out and manifested in to a poison tree for it for to steal a poison apple to eat and die at the end.

I stared with a mood board to get some ideas.

This was inspired by the apple form Snow White as that was such an iconic imagery and the first thing I thought of.

Then I stared doing some thumbnail sketches trying different ideas of how the final illustration will be.

The design I went for is the first sketch I made as it was very striking to me and I wanted to explore that drawing more.

After I chose that I then draw it bigger and finished the piece her is the final look of the illustration.
There was a some changes I made before the final illustration but over all I liked how it came out and mange to make this piece look ominous.

Then I put this piece on a page spread and added the text of the poem in.

I tried keeping the whole page coherent and not out a place so I keep changing the closures around to this look then added a platen on the background of the text making it look more interesting also messed around a little bit with the text type too.

Overall I like the final look of this piece but that I would have done differently was to explore text type more maybe using some of the mini project methods I have learnt.

The next two poem I chose are not been completely to the finale product but you can see my development and thought process of what it was going to look like.

The second poem was Storm on the Island by Seamus Heaney, this pome is about the conflict of the country side and nature of the storms of a cottage on a cliff.

I made a mood board for this poem

With this I started to
develop some sketches.

From this I liked tow of the sketches so I tried and combined then ( sketch 2 and 5)

This is the final sketch I made for this poem

What I was aiming for this piece is trying to draw a big storm and the ocean crashing on the side of the cliff and having the wind blowing the hose making it tiled, I wanted it to look terrifying and cold and the the nature looking like it wants to take back what is there and trying to destroyed the house with it ferocious wind.

The last poem was The Émigrée by Carol Rumens, the poem is about fleeing there country/home being destroyed by war and the longing to go back to their home again.

With the rest of the poem I made a mood board

With this I started my sketches

I went with the third sketch and stared to make a bigger mock up of this design.

with this mock up it showing is a child look at their home bing destroyed in flames of war and people fleeing around her, I tried making this piece emotional and devastating of how war effect innocent people and losing their homes. This topic was not the easiest to make I had to think a while how this would look like and even though it not a finished piece I think I mange get the message across of that the poem is about.
