mood board and character design

My proposition is a somewhat a modern twist of Alice in wonderland as well as in the world of wonderland to it will have some depiction of different eras such as the Tudor period, Georgian era, victorine era and modem day as well. The story will mainly stay the same telling a story of Alice over coming why she must act older and be responsible and to leave behind her childish desires.

Why I chose this project I wanted to explore more with character design and world building and this story is the perfect example to explore these ideas as well as I wanted to have seen how I can have a unique and interesting take on such iconic characters.

Mood board I made to help have ideas for the character designs mostly as reference to be use when having trouble in creating the design as well have the reference to have some what to of  accurately to the periods of clothing I am referencing to in the designs.

With my first design of Alice, before decided what the twist  was, she was mostly actuated to the victorine era, was later scraped as from advice as I need her to be in modern times.

This was another design I made of her being in wonderland how her clothing design will change once she fell through the rabbit hole to wonderland.

These are the concept of her design of her modern clothing, trying to see what will be the best fit for Alice

These are the rest of her designs were mostly trying to figure out what design would best fit this depiction of Alice.

These are only her clothing design mostly because that was the most problem, I was having to her design beside to everything else of her design was her eye were too large and so I ended up change it, so it doesn't look odd but everything else was fine.

These are the final designs I will be going forward to be in my final illustrations I still not have yet decide if I want her clothing to change into a dress  when she falls through the rabbit hole or part of her clothing will change throughout or won't use the dress design at all.

After many discussion on how she should look on what I should try and explore with option in the designs I end up with these two options I'm happy with, the first design is her in the overalls is her modern look I know her looks are odd looking in as it an interesting clothing chose but I wanted to keep her key features that most people will recognize her as Alice and her black ribbon to her shoe and striped tights I think is her key features of Alice that I wanted to keep in her modern clothes to her wonderland clothing.

The other design is more accurate to the original design of Alice, but my take is more exaggerated to the clothing, to her head piece being enlarge and more looking like rabbit ears to show how small she will be to the other characters and be mistaking as a rabbit, I kind of wanted her dress to be big and poofy just to show more of a fantasy look her make her look like she fits into wonderland and how any child want to be like a princesses I wanted it to show in her design her childish desires of wearing one.

Overall, I really like how I explore and developed with her design; this really thought me a lot  on how make a character design is such a long process to get the end resulted but is useful to have when doing finale produces and having to draw the characters multiples time and making sure keeping everything is in place and not missing any feature of the characters.

These are the Queen of Hearts design developments; her first two designs was not made using any references at all I just wanted to get some ideas I had down first before I do any change is as I knew what I had in mind I just need to develop it more.

After I got my refence I started to design her and her clothing I wanted to keep her plus size in body type, the same as the animated movie of Alice in wonderland to make her appear larger to Alice making her more intimating, she mainly based of queen Elizabith the first as show in her mood board to mostly of the hair shape and clothing I did also look at the live action movie of how they have interpreted her as well.

I wanted to combine armer wear to her dress showing she ready for war or a fight I did design her sword as well maybe to be used to be head her enemies, I just want her to look powerful and responsible as her roll of the queen mostly showing she is the adult finger with many of her rule being strict.

Her design was the easy to make as I already had an idea of what I wanted her to look like all I need is to use the references I made to have an understand what those parts of her clothing will look like.

This character of the white queen she was originally going to be the bad guy of the story as I was not going off  from books this but now that I am going to stay with in the book, she not in the first book but in the second one called Alice into the looking glass, and she portrays as the wise white queen.

Her design was main based of the white queen chess pieces showing in the sketches her silhouette is the shape of the chess pieces one and her clothing design is based on Queen Victoria and what she wore when she was ruling.

She also had a sword that was a fencing sword with the chess piece and bored as the design of the handle.

Sadly, she was scraped in the end as she did not fit the narrative any more.

This is my first depiction (the digital drawings) of mad hatter as this was most more inspired by the live action movie of Alice in wonderland but after given some advice on what I could do that’s was interesting is how they like the back of the mad hatter design and suggested to try and see by covering his face with his hair I liked the ideas so I did some more drawing of it and see what fits even exploring his design more too but in the end I went back to the old deign and just cover his hair as it best suit him cause he the mad hatter I don’t want him to look to pristine and more rough looking would be the best fit for him.

I had many design made all having different looked I was just trying to explore more with the white ribbit as he wasn’t human see how far I could try and make an interesting design.

As you can see my developments, I went from a somewhat realistic look to this final design with some humanish features.

He not finish as I need to change a few feature as his pocket watch might change it to a modern watch and maybe his clothing too but everting else is perfect, I just need to make a few changes to his character for the future development

The sketch developments I made for design of the caterpillar.

This is the example of how big he is and how the rest of his body looks like.

This is the final outcome of the caterpillar, his design is a bit more colour use then the rest of the characters I made so far as I want to show his care free side of him in his colour theme as well as making him look mature mostly in his face, his design is most inspired by the animated movie of Alice in wonderland mostly with his silhouette.

multiply sketches of Cheshire Cat design trying to figure out his face and body shape as well.

final design, really like how this came out may not be a completely new look to Cheshire Cat but I did try and make hime different with his body shape as he should resemble more of a main coon cat bread as that was his inspiration for his design.

These are the design and final concepts of the guards, I looked at many example that I made a mood board of to help think of how they will look like when I do my final illustrations.

I do like how this came out and I did think of how my interpretation will looked like, I did want them to still resembles cards in a deck but still show they are armed guards to the queen of hearts this was the harder ones to design as I want sure how to go about it, but it did help that I had a mood board done to take apart of how they were done in other adaptations. In the original sketches the body was going to have a bunch of cards going down as the armer plate but decided not to as if would be a problem trying to draw them over again and again in scene when I do illustrate them as well as I problem wound draw them as often at all for my illustration as they are n

over all I have some what achieve my goal trying to get a complete new design for the characters of Alice in wonderland, but three is some room for a few improvements in some of the characters design I will be revisiting later on with in my project then I will finally caring on with my final illustration for my end project.
